As you may know, the JFM Scholarship began in 2002 because of the generous spirit of the CVHC staff and board, who wanted to honor John F. Mealey, our Executive Director and first CVHC employee. Today, in its fifth year, the JFM Scholarship has grown because of the generous contributions of people like you, who support CVHC and its mission to serve the underserved. With your help, the JFM Scholarship Fund has assisted 65 students with scholarships totaling $55,500. All of our recipients are from low-income families living in a CVHC home or apartment. Your contributions to this annual program are very important as we anticipate a growing number of applicants each year as awareness and need increase. For those of you who would like to give to the fund this year, we are asking for your continued support to keep this scholarship going and to help as many applicants as possible. Remember that most of our scholarship recipients are the first in their families to pursue higher education. Continuing scholarship recipient Gonzalo Castro, Liberal Arts major at La Sierra University, credits his success in passing all of his classes to the JFM Scholarship Fund. He states, “This past quarter was tough. I struggled at the beginning because I didn’t have enough money to buy books. For the first couple of weeks I struggled a lot! It was really hard trying to study with no books and trying to do the assignments. I did my best looking for summaries of the books online and studying from that. I was doing ok in all my classes except for my social work class. Although it was a freshmen level class, most of the grade depended on the book assignments and tests from the book. When I got my scholarship I was able to purchase the books. This money helped me out tremendously. Had it not been for this scholarship, I don’t think that I would have passed my class.” Monica Garcia, a 22-year-old senior at University of California, Irvine, and a scholarship recipient, is very grateful for all of the support she has received from CVHC. “To me, CVHC brought me my first real home. That house has brought me a sense of security and a sense of belongingness that will never leave me, even when I’m not living there anymore. I can honestly say that both my family and I have been lucky to have been offered many opportunities which can be directly or indirectly related to having a CVHC home.” It is clear that your generous contributions to the scholarship fund are greatly needed to help these worthy students excel.
