WHAT IS SELF-HELP HOUSING?

Self-help housing is a method by which families can achieve home ownership. Families form an informal association and agree to help each other build their homes with technical assistance provided by a competent construction supervisor.

Currently building in the cities of

Salton City, Brawley, and Imperial.  

HOW MANY HOURS DOES EACH FAMILY CONTRIBUTE?

Participant(s) contribute a minimum of 40 hours of labor per week towards the construction of all the houses in the group.

Generally, about 1,500 hours of labor per participant(s) household is required with participant(s) contributing at least 40 hours per week. Participant(s) hours include the hours of Applicant, Co-Applicant and approved helpers.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Anyone can participate the same labor…

WHO CAN QUALIFY?

Generally, there are four qualifications: 1. Good credit status 2. Stable limits 3. Income should not exceed low income limits. and 4. Ability and willingness to complete labor requirement.

Each applicant’s information is entered into the computer. Each applicant will have a number on the waiting list. It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify us of change of address and telephone number.

Each lending program has different requirements. The waiting period depends on availability of funds and lots for construction.
